When did the initial ATEX Directive take effect? The ATEX Directive 94/9/EC of March 23rd 1994, was the first ATEX Directive for products and equipment and was adopted by the European Union (EU), under its “new approach” strategy. This was primarily to facilitate free trade in the EU by aligning the technical and legal requirements in the member states, for products intended to be used in potentially explosive atmospheres.
