Cable Glands for Ex d & Ex n equipment
Irrespective of the zone in which the selected cable gland is to be installed, it is essential that the cable gland is capable of maintaining the integrity of the equipment to which it is connected.
The following describes the minimum requirements for various different forms of equipment protection according to IEC 60079 standards.
The Minimum Requirements for Flameproof Type ‘d’ (Ex d) Cable Glands
• Thermal Endurance Tests – Variable temperatures according to material selection, determined by IEC 60079-0
• Cable Pull Out Resistance – Variable according to cable type selection and Cable Gland performance capabilities, including testing of selected sealing ring material, determined by IEC 60079-0
• Screwed entry threads must maintain a Flameproof Path.
• Minimum 5 full thread, or 8 mm, engagement with mating equipment.
• Inner Seal must perform both a Flameproof & Gas Tight function.
• 'Conditions of Use' often exist which must be observed.
• Users must also carefully follow IEC 60079-14 for selection, installation and initial inspection.
The Minimum Requirements for type of enclosure protection ‘n’ (Ex n) Cable Glands
• Cable gland / equipment interface seal is essential.
• Any Restricted Breathing enclosure features must be maintained by the cable and Cable Gland selected.
• Special test under IEC 60079-15 applies for Ex nR equipment, cable & cable entry.
• Some Flameproof cable glands may not comply with the Ex n requirements for Zone 2.
• Inner Seal must be air tight in two directions to achieve compliance with multiple Ex d, Ex e & Ex nR protection concepts.
• 'Conditions of Use' often exist which must be observed.
• Users must also carefully follow IEC 60079-14 for selection, installation and initial inspection.
